 Q:    Hi I'm 16 almost 17 years old..and i have always had a problem with losing weight. In march of this year i started going to the gym between 4-5 times a week and doing cardio workouts. Everytime i go i burn about 1000 calories. Can you please tell me how long it will be before i start to see the lines of a toned stomach? I also have a healthy diet and drink lots of water. Thanks for the question. To get those lines in your stomach, you are on the right track but only have a third of the formula for achieving your goal. It's great to know that you are burning 1000 calories a day but the rest of the weight loss equation is in how many calories you are eating and the difference between what you eat and what you burn. If you are exercising like a mad woman but are eating the same amount of calories that you’re burning, you will never see those lines in your stomach. We have clients like this all the time.  A:    It's a great question. The process of losing weight anywhere (face, butt, thighs, stomach) is the same. Let us first dispel some myths. There is no such thing as spot training. There isn't an exercise in the world that will take excess body fat off an area of your body you consider a problem spot. When you lose weight it comes off all over the body in equal amounts. Think of your extra body fat in layers. For example, let’s say you have five layers around your hips, three around your arms and two in your cheeks. As your body uses stored body fat as energy it draws equally from all these areas. When you burn off a layer of fat you will now have four around your hips, two around your arms and one in your cheeks. What really happens is the cellulite cells begin to shrink (as the adipose tissue inside is used for energy) and it becomes smaller, but the layer example is good for visualizing. Now this is the important part, the only way you will lose a layer or shrink the size of the cells is to consume fewer calories than you burn. Eat a balanced diet while burning more calories than you eat and the body has to use the body fat as an energy source. This is why we created fatburn.com.  Q:    I am 15 years old and in good shape. Summer is starting though and i want to loose a little weight around my inner thighs. How do i do this? what are some good excercises?

 A:    It's a great question to ask and one that we love to give the facts to. First, there is not one exercise that will help with that little extra weight you have on you inner thighs. Spot training an area will just give you a great muscle underneath the fat you have. It will not help with taking away the fat. This is true for your inner thigh, stomach or any other area on your body. When you see those commercial for the ab machines on TV, that promise a great six pack if you do their exercise, you have to look at the fine print. They always include a disclaimer that says, "Combine this exercise with a sound diet and exercise program". The only way you will lose that little extra is to use that body fat as energy. That is why we made fatburn.com. You have to burn more calories than you eat. Body fat has three purposes in our lives. It protects the organs by forming soft pads around them, it protects us from the environment and it's our reserve energy storage. You have to use that reserve to lose the body fat. Join the site and find out how many calories you are eating verses how many you are burning during the day. Make sure that you are burning 500 more than you eat every day and you will lose one pound for the week.  Q:    Hi, I'm wondering what my calorie requirement actually is. I figured it should fall between 1100 and 1400. I'm 6 feet tall and have a medium build. Becky White

 A:    Hi,

Your calorie requirement will change each day. On a day when you go to the gym, you have your daily caloric burn combined with the calories you burned during your workout. For discussion let's say this day totals 1800 calories burned. On this day you can eat 1300 calories and still meet your goal of burning a minimum of 500 more calories than you eat to lose one pound a week.

The next day you didn't have time to go to the gym and only had time for a 30 minute walk. Your daily metabolic rate combined with the walk totals 1600. This day you can only eat 1100 calories to still meet your goal. Get it?

This is one of the reasons I recommend that you use the site everyday. Your calories burned will change everyday and you need to know what to do to meet your goal.

Here's an important fact you should keep in mind. Let's say that you didn't have time to exercise one day. Your daily metabolic rate is 1400. You still have to eat 500 fewer calories this day to meet your goal. The problem is a woman should never drop below 1000 calories consumed. If you do you will slow down your metabolism because you body thinks it's starving.

I realize, at this point, you can feel that you will have to exercise everyday to keep your weight off. Think of your weight loss as a window. Be extremely diligent about meeting your goal daily for the period of time it takes you to lose the weight. After the weight is gone you then just have to match the calories consumed with the calories burned. If you burn 1800 you can eat 1800 and stay at that weight. That's the maintenance process.

 Q:    In the activities section, there is no choice for elliptical training. I do this at least 3 times per week. I use a precor elliptical trainer at the gym. What should I use to log this activity?
