Q & A with fatburn.com's Experts

Q:    Great service! Three questions for you: 1. I don't understand the different option under bicycling stationary (light, Vo@max, etc.) My heart rate is around 85% when I use the bike -- what should I select? 2. I walk on a treadmill at an incline. How should I enter this -- as walking uphill w/out load or as walking at the appropriate MPH? What about adding walking uphill at different MPH/incline levels? 3. Which kind of eliptical machine does your database calculate for (w/ arms or w/out arms)? I use the one with arms -- does it burn significantly more calories than the one that uses legs only? Thanks!
Asked By E.
 A:    Okay,
1. On the bike (or of the other cardiovascular machines) light = below you aerobic zone (60-85% of max heart rate). Aerobic = in that zone. Anaerobic = spiking above the aerobic zone and back down. Vo2 max = all out. You should select Moderate (aerobic) for your time on the bike. 2. We are working on adding all the different walking speeds along with the inclines. Unfortunately with the parameters of 1-4.5 mph and 0-16 degrees of incline we have 120 entries and that would take up too much space on the drop down list. We will come up with a subsection soon, but until then increase your mph entry by .5 for every four degrees of incline. For instance, walking at 3.5 at an incline of 8 degrees would be equivalent to walking level at 4.5 mph. This should give you a more accurate caloric burn. 3. The elliptical trainer that you use the arms with has the same burn rate factor as the trainer without the arms. The reason is that the handles and the foot pedals are not independent. For instance, pushing harder with your arms takes pressure off your legs and visa versa. This results in the same caloric burn over time. Thanks for your questions. If you have any others, please feel free to ask.

Q:    I have lost 60 pounds without any problems. Now I'm lucky if I lose a pound a week. I'm begining to want foods I have not eaten in 6 months, and I feel bloated all the time. What can I do to increase weight loss, get back my will power, and stop feeling bloated?
Asked By Anonymous
A:    Congratulations on your accomplishment! Sixty pounds lost is grand. The key to your continual weight loss will be education and hard work. You should know it takes 3500 more calories burned than you eat to lose one pound of body fat. Are you aware of the amount of calories you intake and burn each day? Use fatburn.com to help you with this process. When you do, there will be no guess work involved in your weight loss. When your numbers at the end of the week add up to at least 3500 more calories burned than you eat you will know, without stepping on the scale, that you have lost one pound. If you want to lose two pounds a week your caloric consumption vs. burn has to add up to at least 7000. Knowledge will give you the power to succeed! Enjoy some of the foods that you like to eat. Just eat them in portion sizes that will allow you to stay on track towards achieving your weekly caloric burn. Fatburn.com will provide you with the education to do this. Try reducing your sodium intake to avoid bloating. Sodium will cause you to retain water and feel bloated. Many low fat/low calorie foods increase the amount of sodium to add flavor. The RDA of sodium in a 2000 calorie a day diet is less than 3500mg. Your daily value may be higher or lower depending on you caloric needs. Also, many people have allergies to glutamine. Glutamine is an additive found in many of your foods and you may not even know it's there. Check the labels of all your foods. Pay special attention to bread, milk, yogurt and cheese. Losing the amount of weight you have shows that you have great determination. Now get the education you need to continue down your path of weight loss by joining fatburn.com. When you know how your body is working you will always be in control.

Q:    Hi! I was wondering if you could tell me which activity category I should use for doing Tae-Bo tapes? Kickboxing, Low-Impact Aerobics, or High-Impact Aerobics? Also, in the 30 minute workout, should I only count the actual aerobic part of the workout and not count the warm-up and cool-down at all? Thanks for your help!
Asked By Jessica
A:    Jessica, use kickboxing for the Tea-Bo tapes. When adding up your aerobics class, use the time you actually exercise in an aerobic state (60-85% of your max heart rate). If the rest of the 30 minutes is stretching, find stretching in the activities page and select the time. Thanks for the question.

Q:    What proof do you have that an elyptical trainer does not burn the actual calories it presents on the meter? I am working out two hours on the machine and it says that my calories burned are 1200.
Asked By KL
A:    KL, your caloric burn rate on your elliptical trainer seems to be about right, although without knowing your weight we can't know for sure. We get all of our burn rate factors for the site from independent reviews of the equipment/exercise or from teaching text. When an average sized woman writes us saying the elliptical trainer at her gym is reporting a caloric burn of 1000 calories in one hour of aerobic training, we know there's something wrong. Every independent published finding on the caloric burn rate of the elliptical trainer puts that rate as similar to the stair master or stationary bike. In order to burn those kinds of numbers (1000 cal/hour) she would have to weigh about 280 pounds. Thanks for the question.

 Q:    How can I burn 500 calories a day @ home?
Asked By Tiffany
A:    Tiffany, in the house is a little more challenging than if you can leave and take a walk, run, bike ride or rollerblade for an hour. If staying at home in is all you can do then try some of the video tapes that you can find at your local rental store. They range from cardio kick boxing to aerobics and if followed correctly will give you the caloric burn you are looking for. Also, ESPN has programming in the morning that you can follow along with to get your workout. Be aware that you have to burn 500 more calories than you eat each day to lose one pound a week. Good luck!
