Hi, my question is...when im at the gym doing cardio, i sometimes get very lathargic and other times i don't. However, when i do get latahargic i cannot get my strength back up to finish the workout. It's very odd to me as most of the time I have no problem, but when i do have that problem its bad. What do you think could be wrong? or what could i do so that it doesnt happen again? thank you very much. |

Melanie, We believe that your question is one that would be better answered by your physician. You should make time for an appointment and state the same issues you have with him/her. Don't put this off. Your mind and body work as one and your piece of mind is bettered served by going right away. The following are a few things that can cause you to feel sluggish and you could ask about - Low blood sugar, Low iron, Hypothyroidism. Good luck. |

Hey guys!
I have a minor question.
When I record my calories burn for weight lifting, I can choose "Weight Lifting" or "Weight Lifting Vigorous". Can you tell me what difference between the two is? Can you give me an example?
Thank you!
Be well...

Hi Wendy,
You actually have three choices for weight lifting. Regular weight lifting, weight lifting vigorus and then circuit training. The difference between the three will be the amount of time you spend between sets. The assumtion is that you will be lifting until fatigue with all three but with weight lifting you will spend 2-3 minutes between sets. While doing vigorous weight lifting your time between sets is around 1 minute. Finally, while doing circuit training your time between sets will be less than 20 seconds. Keep up the good work! |

I know that healthy weightloss is about 1-2 lbs per week. If I'd wanted to go for a 2lb loss per week, about how much exercise should I be doing, and how often?(along with diet) How difficult is it realistically to lose 2lbs per week? |

To be realistic we have to tell you that weight loss, as a whole, is difficult. It takes patience and determination. Your goal of two pounds a week is ambitious. It will take eating a minimum of three balanced meals a day while watching carefully the caloric total. You will then have to make sure that you are burning a minimum of 1000 more calories than you eat each day. It takes 3500 more calories burned than you eat to lose one pound of stored body fat. When you burn 1000 calories a day for seven days that equals 7000 calories for the week and two pounds of fat burned. The average woman burns 1200-1600 calories a day naturally. This total comes from your metabolism plus your workday activities and stress levels. The average woman burns about 400-500 calories an hour aerobically (walking, riding a bike, Stairmaster) and 300-400 calories an hour anaerobically (lifting weights, tennis, basketball). If you were at the high end of all these ways to burn calories, the total caloric burn for your day would be 2500 calories (1600+500+400). At this rate you would be able to eat no more than 1500 calories a day to reach your goal of 1000 more calories burned than you eat each day. As you can see this is a very ambitious schedule but achievable if you have the time and energy. Those decisions we leave up to you. How fatburn.com helps you is by quickly tracking what you eat (percentages + caloric totals), giving you a total caloric burn (metabolism + exercise) and summarizing the two. This allows you to know exactly how many more calories you burned than you ate for each day of your weight loss journey. Good luck. |

I joined a gym on April 30 of this year and I go 3 times a week and mainly I do the treadmill since I am trying to lose weight in my hips and thigh areas but nothing is working. I am desperate and I need to lose 20 lbs by November what can I do. I am 5'11 and I weigh 195. How long do I need to be on the treadmill and what speed and what level of incline? |

You have a little over two months to lose 20 pounds and that would be an incredible accomplishment for anyone. We completely understand your want to get the weight off fast, but patience and determination are going to be the key. You're going to have to increase your walking on the treadmill to seven days a week. Three times a week isn't going to be enough because you have to burn more calories than that every day. Your daily metabolic rate is going to be around 1630 calories a day. Those are the calories your body burns naturally during your day. To increase your caloric burn for the day you have to exercise. If you walk on the treadmill for 90 minutes at 4.5 mph with no incline you will burn 698 calories. This gives you a total caloric burn for the day of 2328. Now, in order to lose 2 pounds a week you will have to keep you caloric intake to 1328. This gives you a thousand calories burned more than you ate for each day and at that rate you can lose two pounds a week. Your patience will be tried here because walking on the treadmill for that amount of time and frequency can be boring. If this becomes and issue try one hour of tread mill and 40 minutes of weight lifting. This will give you about the same caloric burn and, in the long run, is a better way to lose weight and gain overall health. Finally, your determination will come into play. This is a large amount of exercise while carefully watching the amount you eat. How bad do you want to lose the weight? Good luck. |
