Q & A with fatburn.com's Experts

Q:    In the end, is there a difference if you are taking calories in that are liquid (slim fast or a Frappaccino) or are solid like cookies or bread? So, calories are simply calories and on must burn off so many to loose weight, right?
Asked By Barb Reck
A:    The bottom line to your weight loss is going to be whether or not you burn more calories than you eat. That said, there are a few things you should know about the foods you eat and how your body absorbs them. The term "Thermic Effect of Food" will play a roll in how many calories your body burns during the day. To make it simple, it takes energy to break down and absorb the food. If all you're consuming are liquids the body easily absorbs them, with little effort by the digestive system. On the other hand if you eat a chicken breast or potato it takes a considerable amount of energy to break it down and absorb (burning more calories). It also takes longer, allowing you to feel full longer and stave off hunger that can make you go back for more. We would also be remiss if we didn’t tell you that it's important to eat a balanced diet of 20% protein, 50% carbohydrates and no more than 30% fat. We're not sure you can achieve that eating a liquid diet. The highest caloric burn you will get from the day is from your metabolism. It's extremely important that you feed your body all the correct nutrients so you keep that great calorie burning tool functioning normally. Thanks for the question.

Q:    Is folate the same as folic acid?
Asked By Anonymous
A:    Yes, folic acid, also known as folate, is a B-vitamin that can be found in some enriched foods and vitamin pills. It's an especially important vitamin for women who are trying to get pregnant. If women have enough of it in their bodies before pregnancy, this vitamin can decrease the risk for neural tube defects, which are birth defects of the baby's brain or spine. You should consume 400 micrograms (400 mcg) of synthetic folic acid daily from vitamin supplements and/or fortified foods in addition to eating food folate in a healthful diet. The Food and Drug Administration is requiring that folic acid be added to specific flour, breads and other grains. These fortified foods include most enriched breads, flours, corn meals, rice, noodles, macaroni and other grain products. The FDA also emphasizes that adequate levels of folic acid, in the form of folate, can be obtained by eating natural sources such as: leafy dark green vegetables, legumes (dried beans and peas), citrus fruits and juices and most berries. Thanks for the question.

Q:    I did an hour leg work-out (lunges, squats, kicks, etc.). How would you categorize that in activities? Is it low impact aerobic activity?
Asked By Jennifer
 A:    Jennifer,

Depending on the amount of weight you used and the length of time you rested between sets, the workout you did would fall into one of three catagories. I would choose either strength training general, strength training vigorous or circut training. Keep up the good work.
