A:    It's a good question to ask and one we hope you take our advice to heart. Supplements are a multi-billion dollar a year business. They are not regulated by the FDA and are often false in their advertising or flat out dangerous to your health. With your health condition you should be especially careful with anything you choose to put in your body. Because weight loss supplements are not regulated by the FDA and often don't warn you of adverse side effects, you should take their warnings about using them seriously. Most of the weight loss supplements on the market are filled with stimulants like Ma Huang, Ephedra and Caffeine (often all three). The purpose of the stimulants is simply to make your body run faster and burn more calories. Here's where we have a big problem with taking these weight loss aides. You have to ask yourself this simple question. Are you going to take any weight loss supplement for the rest of you life? The answer to that question is, no. When you stop taking the supplement, your body will slow back down. Unless you changed your eating habits you will gain the weight back. This is exactly what happens to 95% of the people who choose weight loss aides or fad diets. Those 95% gain back more weight than they lost within two years. Weight loss is a very simple formula. Burn more calories than you eat. There is nothing you can "take" to help you with this process in the long run. It all comes down to portion control within the foods you eat. Eat a healthy, balanced diet while making sure you are always in a calorie deficit and you will lose weight. That's how the body works and that's why we invented fatburn.com. To lose weight, you need to learn to eat the healthy foods you like in a formula that will allow you lose weight. Join fatburn.com and spend a few months learning how to do this and how your body works. This will give you a lesson that you'll have for the rest of your life. You're 16 and have a lifetime of health ahead of you. Take time to lose the weight you want naturally so you won't have to do it again in the future.

Q:    when working out on the elliptical machine, i enter my weight and time...at the end of my workout, the machine says i burned a significant amount more calories than your metabolic rate activities page gives me credit for....i feel robbed! who's right...for example, i excercised for 69 minutes on the ellipse and the machine said i burned 894 calories...but when i enter the number of minutes the calories calculated on my fatburn.com activity page was significantly lower than that...i think there was almost a three to four hundred calorie difference...i can't remember...what should i do? thanks for your time, diane.
Asked By Diane
A:    We took the burn rate from the Precor Eliptical Trainer. This is the second time we've been asked this question and it will be looked into tomorrow. Make sure that you are entering the correct numbers on the machine. 894 calories for a woman for 69 minutes seems very high. Nonetheless, it will be checked and corrected if wrong. Thanks for the question.

This is the follow up to your question. Our burn rate in the system is right on. Unfortunately the manufacturers claim that you can burn up to 720 calories or more per hour when using their elliptical machines. While the exact amount depends on many factors, elliptical machines burn calories at a rate similar to moderate-to-vigorous use of a stationary bicycle, treadmill, or cross-country ski machine. But keep up the good work on the eliptical trainer. It's a great way to burn calories with low impact.

Q:    Is it possible that one could be working out aerobically even though they are exceeding their "target" heart rate? My pulse routinely passes 180 when I'm doing cardio (I'm 26), but I'm not that winded and can carry on a conversation with a few deep breaths. Is this wierd?
Asked By Veronica
 A:    Veronica,

No it's not weird. The averages for aerobic training are just that, averages. A great marathoner can push his/her aerobic range above 90 percent. That's how the body gets "in shape". The more training you do the better the delivery systems get at supplying the muscles. You are on the right track. The best athletes listen to their bodies. That's what you should do. If you can still hold a converstaion at 180 then you are still aerobic and good for you. Keep it up.

Thanks for the question.

Q:    During my regular work day, I will have the opportunity to take a couple 15 minute walks. Do short spurts of activity like this really add any benefit? or is it necessary to elevate the heart rate and maintain that elevation for a longer period of time to gain any beneift? Thanks.
Asked By Shannon
 A:    Shannon,

Those "short spurts" of walking will help! At the end of the day they will contribute greatly to your total caloric burn. We say, the more the better. However, there are great benefits to staying in your aerobic zone for a longer period of time. The longer you exercise aerobically (60 - 85% of your max heart rate) the higher the percentage of stored fat you will burn as your energy source. As the time goes on in your aerobic zone you burn off your first source of energy (stored carbohydrates) and your body turns to fat to continue. All that said, your 15 minute spurts will give you caloric benefits that will show up at the end of the day. Remember, your goal is to burn at least 500 more calories than you eat every day. Burn those calories wherever and whenever you can.

Thanks for the question.
